Paula.
ENGLISH
THE BEGGINING OF AN END
They say that you are lucky if you miss someone, because that means that you give value to what you´ve got and therefore, you are afraid of losing it; miss means love, and that is a feeling that not everyone has the privilege to experience to our Exchange levels.
This Exchange isn´t what they announce online or what they tell you in the orientations, it is more than that and different for each person.
I could simply use the slogan: “They are not 10 months of your life but a life in 10 months.” It is true; I created my own routine, I started from scratch. I think this goes further than maturity and Independence; it is about personal growth.
It is complicated to transmit everything inside of my head without forgetting details. It is hard to find a place feels like home, where they accept and love me just the way I am but also that they help me to be a better person and the worst part is that this small Paradise is found on the other side of the ocean.
I came to the US thinking that I was a very open-minded person, that I didn´t need to know more; that I was right and they were not. I was wrong; you can always learn more and the open minds don´t have limited storage which is fascinating.
I turned from being agnostic to being baptized; from taking everything for granted to being grateful; from comparing myself to creating my own reality; from feeling like one more sport´s player to look for my place (without stepping on others) and make it mine. Believe in myself.
However, I did not get this alone; this Happiness is thanks to the people in here. From the “good morning Singer Hornets”, practicing, the class change or the school dances to the Deep conversations at 12 am, the “ride arounds” o the “Do you want me to pick you up and get something to eat?”
They are small details, that Little by Little turn into friendships and this become important and essential.
I found my faith not just in God but also in myself, and that I can do anything I want if I hussle.
I always saw the time to leave like something far that wouldn´t hurt much. How naive.
My year started with a family, a chaotic lifestyle and lots of kids. In this first phase, I met my sister Suim, from the one I learned not to settle with what I´ve got but also to be grateful. I fell in love with Basketball again and with some american too. I understood that I can´t be Friends with everyone even if I just have good intentions. I learned to be self-sufficient and organized.
Nevertheless, it was this second phase where i felt it the most. It was pure Discovery. The process to change families was extraodinary fast and easy, as if it was to be. I consider the HARDWICKS (my hostfam) and the HEXTS (my pawpaw and mawmaw) my second global family and the first american. They treated me as one more spoilt daughter/grandaughter, they never doubted of my Word and didn´t even ask about my past hostfam; they hosted me because I needed help and they opened their house to me. They really have a Golden heart.
The last 3 months flew by so fast that nothing seemed true; I guess that is what it happens when you fulfill your dreams, but it is also a “reality slap”, because you know that this is coming to an end and can´t do nothing to pause the time.
I feel like I have lived every second of these 10 months although I always ask myself the same question: what if I had made another decision in a determined moment? Everything would have been so different. Even having lived as many bad things as the good, If they gave me the opportunity to go back and start from the beginning, I would do it infinite times.
Because I couldn´t do all the things that we had planned thanks to our loved Coronavirus, I am keeping this fun for the next time I step on that land. The tittle comes exactly from this: this is just the beginning of a friendship and a family that will last forever.
Blogging helps me to remember and that is the reason why this Will not be the last time y’all (as we, southern people say) Will hear from me.
You guys can find a video of this awesome year at the end of the page although the best memories are the ones that are not recorded.
I hate goodbyes so let’s make this a see you soon; this time from Spain.
Until the next chapter.
Paula.
