Paula MP. en EE.UU. - Capítulo 10 - It's Corona time
IT´S CORONA TIME.
No me iba a rendir.
Nunca me aburro.
Cuidaros.
Before starting this experience, we, exchange students, imagine how we would want this year to be like; we “design it”. I know that of all the crazy stuff that I thought it could happen, living a pandemic was definitely not in my list. But as weird as it sounds, I feel lucky that I am still here, in the US; and I will tell you why.
For the ones who do not follow my blog or do not remember, I changed to another family. Two days after making my decision, I was living with them which was rarely fast. Everything was fine and I was happy; it was a new beginning and we had lots of plans to do. I was also getting ready for track season and I was told that if I worked hard, I could go far. To top that, I was going to have PROM in two weeks. They all were good news.
I remember going that last day of class thinking: “this is a new chapter and you need to give the best of you, because you already know who your friends are and you have found yourself too”. I had found my sparkle and I was ready to let it shine.
Not going to lie, I also thought: “ugh another boring and tiring day of school”.
I guess this universe (or God) had a different plan, not just for me but for everyone.
That following weekend, the American agency sent our representative, (who is in charge of our security in the US), who called us, an email encouraging the exchange students to come back to their countries due to the coronavirus. As you can imagine, our faces went white; I just started crying. I began to text my parents, representative, Spanish agency, Spanish coordinator…it was a real mess. I knew that if I had to step on a plane with all this going on, I would have big chances of catching the virus.
I was not going to give up. My host fam wanted me to stay and they accepted me as their responsibility. My Spanish agency and my natural parents also agreed that I was safer in here, but nobody knew how much time I would have left.
With no school, that following week, I hanged out with friends; we had fun. Little did we know that they were going to declare quarantine for everyone a few days after.
They cancelled all the events: track, softball, PROM, graduation…
We were all broken-hearted; in the end exchange students are like seniors; next year they won´t be in school either. This was also OUR year. It is frustrating to still be in this country but not be able to see your friends.
Why do I say that I am lucky then? Because that´s right, I am still here. All my exchange friends were sent home, even my best friend Suim. I am the only one left in this region. I could have left and I decided to finish what I started.
I am so grateful for being here. I always find stuff to do: bleaching and sewing clothes to give them a new look (because half of the clothes that brought do not fit me anymore), work out to burn all those calories we gain during this exchange, clean the pool while I get my arms tanned or even help fix the porch. I never get bored. I also use this blog as a space to channel my emotions.
My host family is great, mostly my grandparents, are the people that I am going to miss the most.
Living in the middle of nowhere has been beneficial during these circumstances; I got to celebrate Easter painting eggs, I have ridden a horse and had made a homemade photo shoot wearing beautiful PROM dresses that my grandma (or mawmaw as everyone calls her) let me borrow or just hanging out with a friend. Everything always on a safe way.
A fun fact is that, with the help of a few other exchange students from my same agency but living this experience in other states we made a video about all this situation to show the people that although we are here to live our best life we are conscious of the circumstances and we decide to stay at home. You guys can find this video and some other pictures at the bottom of this page!
It gets hard sometimes; in the end I am living a pandemic with a host family and far from all the Spanish reality. Hugging has always be my thing and this americans plus the corona are making it impossible lol.
In moments like this, is when I feel lucky the most. I really hope this horrible disease can help us create a new society where we give importance to the important, like family, friends and time instead of money.
Where we live the moment instead of thinking so much about the future; because as we all can see, it is never guaranteed.
From the safety of my home to everyone reading this. Please, be patient. As we all are.
Take care of yourselves.
Paula.
